Assessment Types

What type of assessment is best in your view: open-ended, selected-response, or performance?

Assessment reforms in other successful countries have included moving towards more robust performance assessments that require higher levels of thinking aside from just recalling facts (Pellegrino, 2014). With another movement towards developing 21st-century competencies to prepare students for the future, educators must consider both how these skills are embedded into teaching and learning and how these skills can be adequately assessed to provide students with meaningful feedback. Although there are appropriate times for both open-ended (written response) and select-response (multiple), if possible with the given time constraints, the most meaningful assessment type would be the performance-based task. Students have a higher level of engagement, tend to demonstrate both content and skills and are more involved in the process.
